"ISI no Haath" - Mahendrasinh Parmar

On 22/7/16, we got an interesting online discussion on a story “ISI no haath” by Mahendrasinh Parmar in context of "Does literature make real difference in human life or not?"

This story is published in "Polytechnic". This book has several other interesting stories also. You can purchase the book from Prasar, near Atabhai chowk, Rupani Circle, Bhavnagar.

Here are my views:-

‘ISI no hath’ is a very interesting short story by Mahendrasinh Parmar. It is satire on the so-called ‘religion’. By reading the title the first thought comes in our mind is about terrorists and Muslims. Later on we come to know that the story is about the partial behavioural pattern of religion and how it creates terrorists.

Mostly whenever we go to any temple we see how there is one ‘VIP’ line. If God is for all then why this partiality. These religions create an atmosphere and make people frustrated at that level, that they are ready to do anything. We can see religion as a devil in this story. How the temple is turned into a business centre? The S.P escapes at the end of the story because he knows that how hard he tries this practices are not going to stop. He will be transferred but no one would stop it.

Here I recall one dialogue from the movie “Oh My God”,

“This place is filled God-Fearing people not God-loving people” so the business will go on no matter how hard anyone tries.

May be in past temples were for peace, but now it is just a part of business.

This story captures reality in a very unique way. The use of metaphors and dialect of Gujarati language is amazing. "Literature is the mirror of society" we can say that. This story reflects the reality of the present time.Many people blindly follow what is suggested by so-called "religious leaders". I don't used the word Guru for them, they don't deserve.

Lastly I would like to quote few lines,

“Ye paap hai kyaa ye puny hai kyaa

Rito par dharm ki mohare hai

Har yug me badalate dharmo ko

Kaise aadarsh banaaoge?????"

The Mountains are calling and I must go… Recently I had a delightful experience of visiting Junagadh for Academic tour organized by Department of English, Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji Bhavnagar University. Being a Research Scholar and a Faculty member, this was my first tour in a different role. It is said that a physician treats but nature heals. It is absolutely true. "RIP"; Rest in Peace those who are Alive....

Hello Friends, After a long time I am writing here. Hope you all are fine. This time I have come up with a different interpretation of the phrase “RIP”. Mostly this phrase “RIP”; Rest in Peace is used for the people who are no more. We use this phrase to give sympathy towards the departed soul. The soul may get peace wherever it travels. No one exactly knows where the soul travels. Sometimes this phrase is used out of care and sometimes just for show off on social media. While sitting alone near a cemetery, a thought struck in my mind. Why do we use RIP only for dead people????? We can also use it for those who are alive. Many time people use RIP when a person is dead. The same people might have harassed the dead person when he is alive. So what’s the point of “RIP”?
