It Happens - @angel

Hello friends, This is my small effort to pen down something. This write-up or small poem is inspired by my favourite writer R.M.Drake. He is from Miami. He writes in simple language. I am inspired from his way of writing. What is the meaning of your writing if it is not understood by anyone. It Happens It happens With everyone All the time….. When there is first rainfall and we feel like dancing                                                           ……It happens When the entire world is happy for us but we are broken                                                             …...It happens When we see a child playing and a child in us awakes                                                              ……It happens When we see outer self growing and inner self is crushed into pieces                                                                .…..It happens When we get unexpected things at unexpected times

Even though we may never have been there, or indeed even met anyone fro

Archetypal Criticism - Northrop Frye

In literary criticism the term archetype denotes recurrent narratives designs, patterns of action, character-types, themes, and images which are identifiable in a wide variety of works of literature, as well as in myths, dreams, and even social rituals. The Canadian literary critic Northrop Frye theorized archetypal criticism in purely literary terms. The major work of Frye’s to deal with archetypes is Anatomy of Criticism but his essay The Archetypes of Literature is a precursor to the book. Frye’s thesis in “The Archetypes of Literature” remains largely unchanged in Anatomy of Criticism. Here I am sharing my views about archetypal criticism. These questions were a part of our blog task. What is Archetypal Criticism? What does the archetypal critic do? There are different meanings of Archetypal Criticism. Dictionary - an image or symbol that is used repeatedly in art or literature. The Archetypal criticism means identifying patterns of action, character-types,

Dryden's Essay: Of Dramatic Poesy

John Dryden (9 August 1631 – 1 May 1700) was a prominent English poet, critic, translator, and playwright who dominated the literary life of the Restoration Age; therefore, the age is known as the Age of Dryden. He  was credited with the honour of Poet Laureate of England in 1668. John Dryden’s An Essay of Dramatic Poesy presents a brief discussion on Neo-classical theory of Literature. He defends the classical drama saying that it is an imitation of life and reflects human nature clearly. An Essay on Dramatic Poesy is written in the form of a dialogue among four people: 1.) Eugenius, 2.) Crites, 3.) Lisideius 4.) Neander. Neander speaks for Dryden himself. Eugenius favours modern English dramatists by attacking the classical playwright. But Crites defends the ancients for the principles of dramatic art paved by Aristotle and Horace. Crites opposes rhyme in plays and argues that though the moderns excel in sciences, the ancient age was the true age of poetr

The Study Of Poets - Matthew Arnold

Matthew Arnold (1822 –1888) was an English poet and cultural critic. The Study of poetry is the first essay in 1888. It contains many of the ideas for which Arnold is best remembered.   According to Matthew Arnold, the first great principle of criticism is disinterestedness or detachment. Disinterestedness on the part of the critic implies freedom from all prejudices, personal or historical. “Poetry is criticism of life, governed by the laws of poetic truth and poetic beauty”  As per Arnold, Poetry is "Criticism of Life". In poetry, this criticism of life must conform to the laws of poetic truth and poetic beauty. He was on the side of Art for Life’s Sake. Matthew Arnold had a viewpoint that one should be free from historical and personal estimate to have a real estimate. For this he gave “Touchstone Method”. I think the principle of 'Disinterestedness' or 'Detachment' given by Matthew Arnold is interesting and relevant in recent

Sense and Sensibility - Jane Austen

Sense and Sensibility Sense and Sensibility is a novel by Jane Austen, published in 1811. It was published anonymously; By A Lady appears on the cover page where the author's name might have been. It tells the story of the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne, both of age to marry. One sister represents sense that is rationality while other represents sensibility that is emotion. Marianne represents Romantic ideas while Elinor represents Classical ideas. The nature of the sisters is quite different. The novel deals with the themes like:- 1.      Classicism and Romanticism 2.      Money/Inheritance 3.      Marriage 4.      Expectations 5.      Family 6.      Motherhood This book was in my syllabus at UG and PG level. There is a lot difference in my understanding about the novel at both the level. During my graduation, I read this book just as a love story of two Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne. Of course at that time the reading was only exam

Ancient vs Modern: Isn't it stupid to think who is better?

In Semester 1, we had an online discussion on Ancient vs Modern: Isn't it stupid to think who is better? Here are my views. Share your views in the comment section. I think it is impossible to give an exact answer that who is better ancient or modern. Both are equally necessary.  Ancients give us the idea of what not to repeat in the modern time. It is connected through past and present. As we say that from our mistakes done in past we try not to repeat in present. Trees get new leaves in spring season but it doesn't get a new trunk. Likewise Ancients are the trunk and the Moderns are the new leaves . Both are equally necessary. After reading the article I would like to say that the Moderns should respect the sentiments of the Ancients. Same way the Ancients also should move forward with changes around them. They should not get stuck in their old ideas. They should also accept new ideas. Whenever I try to teach any technology to my mother she always tells a guja

My Top 3 Quotes of Virginia Woolf

Online Discussion : Quotes of Virginia Woolf: My top 3 quotes. In Semester 1, we had to share our favourite 3 quotes of Virginia Woolf. My favourite 3 quotes by Virginia Woolf are as follow:- 1.) "They can because they think they can"       She herself broke the barriers and rose to the challenges. It is very important to have faith in oneself. If we think we can then definitely we can do something and can also overcome our problems. That's why everyone  says "Be Positive". 2.) "Never pretend that the things you haven't got are not worth having"      Many times we lose or fail to achieve something, we feel that this was not worth having. It was worth having but we fail to work hard for it. Ms Woolf has mentioned "tireless enthusiasm" , it is very necessary to give your 100%. Dedication is necessary to get anything in any field. 3.) "If you do not tell truth about yourself you cannot tell it about other pe

Threats to Creativity and Freedom of Expression

Online Discussion : Threats to Creativity and Freedom of Expression We had an interesting discussion during our journey in Semester - 1 In 21st century we see that people have become more and more narrow minded as religious sentiments are concerned. We say India is progressing , then why people are not able to control their religious sentiments. What's the problem if A.R.Rehman gives music in an Iranian film? Even we have many songs sang by pakistani singers singing in indian film, but it is enjoyed. If people will go on and on objecting things like this way then slowly and gradually people lose their creativity as the religion sentiments are important.  And who are these people opposing these type of things. These people just have a habit to arouse one or the other issue. Some people are born only to find out faults in the name of religion. Tipu Sultan is the man from history and movie is for delight. Why can't people enjoy the movie. Every time bringing in r

Irfan Habib Historian Interview and Caste Politics and Ashoka in Bihar

In Semester 1, we had an interesting  Online Discussion on  Irfan Habib Historian Interview and Caste Politics and Ashoka in Bihar  Here I would like to share my opinions. My opinion regarding the first article by Iran Habib is as follow:-        We have never been to the history. The facts have been recorded . How can we say that a person is good or bad? The perception changes from person to person. I don't think any group or party should be blamed.         At some point I agree with the writer regarding the banning of meat. All the religion have their own fasting season. Considering some religion and banning the meat is a biased thought. If we look through religious point of view, then meat should be banned forever because through out 365 days all religion has some or the other special day . Rationaly thinking it would be impossible to provide food grains to all the people. My opinion about the second article " Caste-ing Ashoka in Bihar":-         Y

Reflective Thinking: The Damage Done By Indian Schools

On 6/4/16, we got an amazing article for discussion. I personally enjoyed a lot discussing this article. Here is the link of the article:- Article: http://www.huffingtonpost.in/nazreen-fazal/an-indictment-of-the-indi_b_9416416.html This article (by Nazreen Fazal) can help on how to do reflective Thinking. Some of the observations are very relevant to all of us . . . Which three thoughts u like the most? I like 1) In school, history was firmly contained to rote learning of dates and places. We were forced to learn the dates when wars started and ended INSTEAD of WHY they happened or WHAT could have stopped them. 2) English was about memorizing select poems and writing down the notes the teacher dictated INSTEAD of being asked WHAT our INTERPRETATION was. 3) I was NOT taught . . .  How to do self-guided research and review Independent thought and how to articulate my own opinion in speech and writing. 4) My university education became the beginning
