Day 1 – 7th February 2020

Inaugural Function

The conference was inaugurated by Shirish Sahasrabudhe( Head,ELTIS) , Ms.Maria Smarski and Dr. G. Suvarna Lakshmi.
The Chief Guest of this gathering was Ms.Maria Smarski (Regional English Language Officer (RELO) for India, American Embassy, New Delhi). She started her discourse by sharing her experience as how she entered this field of English language instructing. In 1982 she did her first gathering where she met Braj.B.Kachru and his significant other. He affected her a great deal. This was captivating for me to know, as I read a great deal about him in English Language Teaching books when I instruct. One of her companion revealed to her that “If there is no ideas then I should retire’’, it is so insightful and furthermore startling. Imagine a scenario in which we truly have no thoughts left, how life would be. Ma'am recommended that it is important to recognize what instructors need and what to make as far as creating learning material.
The Keynote Speaker of this inaugural function was Dr. G. Suvarna Lakshmi (Associate Professor, Dept. of ELT, SDE, EFL University, and Hyderabad). By giving a case of driving Ma'am began her discussion about the subject of the gathering. Educator is significant when we talk about the way toward creating material. Additionally a few inquiries ought to be remembered like who is the objective gathering for whom the material needs to arranged, are we giving a similar thing as they need or need, is the educator adaptable, are we utilizing ICT as a strategy or material… and so on.

Symposium:
Topic: Appropriate Language Teaching Materials: Creating, selecting and reviewing them.
Chairperson: Prof. Meera Srinivas, Department of Materials Development Testing and Evaluation, The English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad.
Meera Ma'am discussed the suitability of the material structured by age, intellectual development, development and need.

The Primary speaker for this session was Dr. Bhaskaran Nair Sir, Professor of English from Hindustan University, Padur, Chennai (formerly of Pondicherry Central University) and President ELTIF (English Language Teachers’ Interaction Forum). Bhaskaran Sir has understanding of educating to various understudies like senior ladies and detainees who were in prison accountable for a few killings. So encouraging material is freak instead of the standard educators. Sir talked about that by making B.Ed. Program doesn't mean it creates great instructors. All the techniques are talked about in the course, educators are additionally mindful of the approach, yet not about the utilization of the strategy. It is important to improve sources accessible to educator yet additionally instructors need to make mindful of it.

The Second Speaker for the session was Dr.Rama Mathew (ELT Consultant, former Professor, Department of Education, Delhi University). Rama Ma'am discussed material improvement and how to survey the material. She recommended two different ways of taking a gander at material; a large scale see and a pre-see. Learning implies cooperation between Learner's speculation and Input (Material).Teachers on going judgment on what worked, what didn’t ,when and why based on evidence. Retrospective evaluation of materials opposed to predictive evaluation needs to be employed. Learner should be given the power of decision. Prescribed texts are taken so seriously that we kill the imagination.

The Third Speaker of the session was Dr. Hitesh D. Raviya (Professor and Head, Department of English, The M.S. University of Baroda, Gujarat). Sir started with what does appropriate material means? We as a whole learn in twentieth Century and we educate in 21st Century. Sir likewise shared his task work tested in Kutch district, where the understudies were given the territorial poems converted into English for Language Teaching/Learning. As that territorial poems and the way of life will cause them to become familiar with the language effectively. It was likewise for distinguishing issue like learning the language and afterward corresponding the way of life. For example teaching the poem like “Rain Rain Go away…’’, now this poem is misfit for Indian Students as in India. As in India we celebrate rain, so how can students understand the cultural concept and grasp the language. We as teachers are in a transition period and it is difficult to fight with imposition, creative, collaborative, choice with material. Teaching has to be redefined.

Resource Person: Ms. Maria Snarski (Regional English Language Officer (RELO) for India, American Embassy, New Delhi.)

Ma'am examined Bloom's scientific categorization and dependent on it presented numerous Monday inspiration exercises; plans for tired instructors. Action is a help to the following thing you do. The goal of the action relies upon SWBAT (Students will have the option to). It is important to perceive how as an educator we are utilizing that exercises in the study hall as opposed to given in the book.

Starting from Myths to Technology, all does the same thing of conditioning a human mind. For example Amazon is conditioning the Compulsive Shopping Disorder in humans. Sir further discussed some measurements using which material can be generated in Neuro lab. MMN 100( Mismatch Negativity)Ability to recognize speech soundsN170 Expertise... Hearing and SeeingN400 Understanding (Linguistic Meaning)P600 Understanding Structure. It is necessary to think about this new aspect of including Neuron Science in generating material for Language Learning /Teaching. “If the academic ardent wouldn’t wake up, the corporates are going to take up” with this thoughtful remark the session ended. It was indeed a very interesting session. I never thought of with the help of science language material can be generated.

First all of them have to describe the picture to another pair and then they have to find out the other part of the picture. Then all the pictures have to be arranged in a line to find out the theme of the picture. The Pictures had the theme of Zoom in. A Hungarian Illustrator - Istvan Banyai had designed this series of Zoom in. Many other activities were conducted in this session. Attention is guaranteed if learning is fun.

 Paper Presentation 1:
In this session I (Vaidehi Hariyani) and my student Kavisha Alagiya got wonderful chance to present our paper.

The Topic of my paper was on “From downloaders to uploaders: A new innovative and emerging trend of creating teaching learning material through ICT tools.” The paper focused on the Use of ICT in generating teaching material and its effects on learning. With the help of the case studies done by Dr.Dilip Barad Sir on our Smt.S.B.Gardi Department of English, MKBU the paper was further analyzed. Dr.Dilip Barad Sir has motivated all of us teachers and students to become downloaders to Uploaders.

Kavisha Alagiya presented her paper on “The Effects of ICT in learning English language and literature.” As a teacher it was a mixed feeling to see your student presenting her first paper at National Conference. Very confidently she presented her views and also answered the questions.
We are appreciative to Vishal Bhadani Sir, Hitesh Ravaiya Sir, Dharmendra Seth Sir and Dr.Z.N.Patil Sir for some productive conversation on our paper. Much obliged to you for propelling us.

We are also thankful to Dr. Mrinal Dhongde, Chairperson of our Paper Presentation. Thank you for appreciating our efforts.

Materials having methodology is intrinsically, but not always. Usability depends on learners. OER; Open Educational Resources is accessible and available in plenty. Material works as support and teacher is in the role of implementation. In this case role of a learner and feedback becomes very important. Discussed about the project on Children’s Choice and Voice. Sir talked about two India. The one is developed and the other is not developed. The definition of teaching has changed and role of teacher as well. Presently there are such a significant number of learning stages accessible like EGPathshala, Swayam Portal and numerous MOOCs. Students won't require instructor in not so distant future. May be we can say the job of instructor will change. Learners won’t need teacher in near future. May be we can say the role of teacher will change. This is the transition period of teaching methods and the teacher are changing. The higher education is becoming borderless.

Paper Presentation:
The theme of this session was using limited resources innovatively for effective language acquisition and Materials for different age groups to make teaching-learning a fun experience

1.)Dr. P. Bhaskaran Nair
The topic of Sir’s presentation was “Teacher competence vs. the use, misuse and non-use of materials”. Sir gave an interesting activity to find out pronunciation of certain words from online dictionary. Teachers also need to learn and start learning before teaching. Sitting in an AC classroom with a laptop and write about marginalized easy, rather than practically visit that place. Thoughts are now been downloaded rather than getting it naturally. That was so thoughtful. Language should be taught for self-empowerment and for the upliftment of the downtrodden.  Employability is a part of that.

2.)Dr.Rama Gautam
Discussed about Blended Learning and Flipped Learning. She very well explained the use of blended learning and flipped learning as a teacher.
3.) Mr.M. Jawahar
The topic of the paper presentation was Materials for vowel teaching at primary level through emoticons. How emoticons help in generating language learning material. It may help at the primary level for language generation.
4.) Mr. D. Densingh Daniel
The topic of the paper presentation was Teaching materials: visual literacy, memefication and evaluation. Memefication and how it tends to be utilized in educating. Featured thoughts regarding Multimodal v/s Monomodal.
Very interesting presentation!

What creative techniques are being used to attract my attention? How might different people understand this message differently than me? What values, lifestyles and point of view are represented in or omitted from the message. Why this message is being sent?

Panel Discussion: The Overview of the Conference
Panelists:
1. Prof. Dr. T. Vijay Kumar, former Professor of English and Dean, Faculty of Arts, Osmania University, Hyderabad
2. Dr. G. Suvarna Lakshmi, Associate Professor, Dept. of ELT, SDE, EFL University, Hyderabad
3. Dr. J. John Sekar, Head & Associate Professor, Research Department of English Dean, Academic Policies & Administration, The American College,Madurai
Chairperson: Dr. Madhuri Gokhale, Associate Professor, Fergusson College and Member, Advisory Board, ELTIS

Dr. J. John Sekar was the first speaker for this session. In a very funny manner he highlighted some very serious questions that need to think of. Teachers are responsible for whatever material they use in the classroom. One should be always careful of 3 T. 1.)Teacher 2.) Technology 3.)Textbook. Learner’s autonomy should be targeted. Any material can be used but it should teach communication skills. Otherwise in speech there will be “Verbal Diarrhea”. There are many teachers who teach literature but very few who teach language.
Dr.G.Suvarna Lakshmi was the Second Speaker of the session who started with a question. What would be teacher’s role if technology overtakes? A teacher’s role will remain a teacher’s role, but the function will ke
ep on changing. She also summarized about all the technology and its use in education discussed during the whole conference.
Dr.T.Vijaykumar, the third speaker of the session discussed problem regarding Indian Context. If students are not getting employability is not only because of English. All the problems are connected to the English language. At the end language is a language. We assume too much about this language. ELT in India is a disaster. It is necessary to ask why we need it. We should see language as a object. He also questioned this concept of English as Second language because in India it simultaneously studied with other languages.

Valedictory session
Publication of selected papers from the 9th NC were released at the hands of Prof. Dr. T. Vijay Kumar, Professor of English and former Dean, Faculty of Arts, Osmania University, Hyderabad and also distribution of Best Paper Awards was done by him.  Concluding remarks & Vote of thanks were given by Prof. Shirish Sahasrabudhe (Director: ELTIS-SIFIL)

"RIP"; Rest in Peace those who are Alive....

Hello Friends, After a long time I am writing here. Hope you all are fine. This time I have come up with a different interpretation of the phrase “RIP”. Mostly this phrase “RIP”; Rest in Peace is used for the people who are no more. We use this phrase to give sympathy towards the departed soul. The soul may get peace wherever it travels. No one exactly knows where the soul travels. Sometimes this phrase is used out of care and sometimes just for show off on social media. While sitting alone near a cemetery, a thought struck in my mind. Why do we use RIP only for dead people????? We can also use it for those who are alive. Many time people use RIP when a person is dead. The same people might have harassed the dead person when he is alive. So what’s the point of “RIP”? Suppose in the day time you behave very badly with someone. Is he/she going to get sound and peaceful sleep at night? The dead person will never come back so we just say “RIP”. Of course ever

“My friend, the things that do attain” - Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey.

Hello friends, I would like to share a poem which I studied during my graduation. The title of the poem is “My friend, the things that do attain”. It is written by Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey. Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey (1516/1517 – 19 January 1547), was an English aristocrat, and one of the founders of English Renaissance poetry. MY friend, the things that do attain The happy life be these, I find: The riches left, not got with pain; The fruitful ground; the quiet mind; The equal friend; no grudge; no strife; No charge of rule, nor governance; Without disease, the healthy life; The household of continuance; The mean diet, no dainty fare; Wisdom joined with simpleness; The night discharged of all care, Where wine the wit may not oppress: The faithful wife, without debate; Such sleeps as may beguile the night; Content thyself with thine estate, Neither wish death, nor fear his might. In the above mentioned poem, there is a list

" The Winged Word"- David Green

In my Graduation syllabus, I had a book named “ The Winged word”. This anthology is edited by David Green. It is anthology of poems compiled for the students of English literature in the B.A courses of Indian Universities. The chronological order, in which the poets are arranged in this book, helps the students to note the development of English poetry from one age to another. Referring to this book after a long time span, gives me a immense joy. There are many poems in this book. We were given some selected poems to study during three years of graduation. The poems which were in my syllabus are as follow:-    1.)   I Find No Peace – Sir Thomas Wyatt (1503-42)    2.) My Friend, the Things That Do Attain –Henry Howard (1517- 47)    3.) The Nymph’s Reply to the Shepherd –Sir Walter Ralegh (1552-1618)    4.) The Nightingale – Sir Philip Sidney (1554- 86)    5.) Since There’s No Help – Michael Drayton (1563- 1613)    6.)
