Tragedy - Basics and Difference between tragedies. #MonparaArtsCollege #English

The tragedy genre is one of the oldest literary structures. The word “tragedy” is not used here in its usual sense of a real-world catastrophe that brings misery or loss of life, but rather dramas, often revolving around a character who is brought to personal ruin and destruction, often through his or her own actions or failings. Ancient Greek playwrights and philosophers established the genre during the creation of the stage drama, and later writers such as Shakespeare created masterworks using tragedy’s distinctive characteristics. Stage drama was created by the ancient Greeks during public festivals more than 2,500 years ago. The word “tragedy” means “goat song,” and refers to the goats that were used as prizes or sacrifices during these festivals. At the time, there were only two genres of drama — comedy and tragedy — that inspired the comedy and tragedy masks that still symbolize drama in modern times. Early Greek masters of tragedy included Sophocles , Euripides , and Aes...

This course was developed by the University of Pennsylvania and adapted by FHI 360 for the Online Professional English Network (OPEN), sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. This Course is available on the Canva platform. Recently, I went for an interview for a degree in engineering college. Being a teacher of English Literature, I did face a few difficulties. That is when I decided to go for this course. Of course, while teaching English Language Teaching as a subject, had gone through the topics like ESP (English for Specific Purpose). We as teachers must update ourselves with the topics we might teach shortly that are not related to literature. This awareness is important that there is different English for different purposes. This course was designed for non-native English speakers who are interested in improving t...

ये translation नहीं आसान…

ये translation नहीं आसान… Recently I got a chance to translate two speeches for the Government Authorities for a function. One of the speeches I got was in Hindi and another was in Gujarati. The Speeches had to be translated into all three languages. I don't know who wrote the original and in which language, but I had to translate it into English. The time given was only a few hours. The first speech I received was in Gujarati which was handwritten and it was challenging to read what was written. Later on, I got the speech typed in Hindi in form of a Word file. Due to lack of time, I started using machine translation for the speech. There were many tools for machine translation but proceeded with Google Translation. Machine Translations are hilarious because the translation is done literally and it distorts the essence of the context. Translation of Hindi into English still was better, but Gujarati into English was a mess. I had to give extra effort to change the words, and sente...
